Dolomite - Platinum Grey Polished Marble Basket Weave Mosaic Tile

A running bond has an axis: laid one way it stretches a wall, laid the other it lifts a ceiling. A basketweave has none. Because every pair of rectangles is answered by another pair turned through ninety degrees, the pattern is symmetrical in both directions and exerts no pull on the proportions of a room. It gives you pattern without spatial effect, which makes it the safe choice where a room is already the shape you want it and the floor simply needs to be interesting.

The contrast decides how far away the pattern remains legible. Icy dolomite white against dark grey dots resolves from right across a room, where a low-contrast weave would dissolve into texture at the same distance. If the intention is a floor that is noticed, this is the version that achieves it.

Polished, the many small faces set at right angles return light from different directions, so the weave reads even in flat lighting. Reflection argues for walls over wet floors, and the pale dolomite ground shows acid etching less readily than a darker polished stone would.
