Light Split Face Travertine Ledger Panel

Relief is only visible when something separates the raised parts from the recessed ones, and on a split panel that something is shade. On a darker stone the shadows are deep and the contrast between crest and crevice is strong, so the texture reads sharply. On a pale stone the shadows are far softer, and the same physical relief registers as gentle modelling rather than as rugged rock. The wall reads textured and warm instead of textured and dramatic.

That makes lighting the decisive factor. A pale split face lit flatly from the front loses most of its character; the same panel washed by a fitting placed close to the wall and aimed along it comes fully alive, with every crest picking up a highlight. Where no such lighting position can be arranged, a darker stone will do more of the work.

Travertine is porous, and a split face has a very large surface area, so it takes considerably more sealer than a sawn tile. Seal it, and keep it to walls; a broken face is not a floor.
