Rosso Levanto Wave Marble Tile (305 mm x 610 mm)

A Wave tile is not a flat tile carrying a printed pattern; the face is milled into a fluted, three-dimensional profile, so the surface has real relief. In Rosso Levanto, a deep cherry-burgundy marble crossed by stark white veining, that milling does something specific and slightly unusual.

The flutes run across the stone and the veining runs wherever it happens to run. Where a white vein crosses the crest of a flute it catches light and reads bright; where the same vein continues into a trough it falls into shade and disappears. A single vein therefore appears, vanishes and reappears along its length. On a plain stone a fluted profile produces regular light and shade; on a heavily veined one it produces something far less predictable, and that is the argument for this combination over a quieter marble.

It follows that the tile needs light arriving at an angle. Lit flatly from directly in front, the relief collapses and much of the effect is lost. Lit from above or from one side, the profile reads in full.

This is a wall product. A milled relief cannot be walked on comfortably or cleaned easily underfoot, so it belongs on feature walls, fireplace surrounds, reception faces and bar fronts. Being calcitic, it dulls wherever acid touches it.
