Beige Polished Marble Basket Weave Mosaic Tile

The grout has to pick a side. Matched to the beige field it disappears into the stone and leaves the black squares standing alone as punctuation, so the weave stays legible and the squares do their historical job of marking the repeat. Matched to the dark squares, or simply left dark, every joint becomes a line and the floor turns into a grid with beige infill; the woven reading collapses entirely. The same sheet produces two completely different floors, and a sample board rarely reveals it, because samples are almost always grouted pale.

Beige marble takes the polish well. It is a warm, softly veined stone rather than a dramatic one, which is what this pattern needs: a basketweave is already doing the visual work, and a strongly figured marble beneath it would only compete.

Polishing lifts the beige and gives the black squares depth. On a wet floor the reflection is of no help underfoot, and acids etch any calcitic stone into a dull mark, most visibly on the polished black.
