Carrara White- Nero Marquina Polished Marble Flower Mosaic Tiles

The rosette pattern again, this time in the strongest contrast available: milky Carrara against near-black Nero Marquina, polished.

Contrast decides what a radial pattern does. With two closely toned stones the petals emerge softly and the surface reads as texture. Push the two ends apart to white and black and the rosettes snap into distinct objects, each flower a discrete motif with a definite edge, so the floor or wall reads as a designed pattern rather than as a worked surface. There is no middle ground at this level of contrast: the pattern will be the first thing anyone notices about the room.

There is a nice accident in the pairing. Nero Marquina carries sharp white veining of its own, so the same white that forms the petals also appears as thin lines within the dark pieces. Figure and ground swap material across the sheet, which is the sort of thing that only becomes visible close up.

Polishing suits the composition, because curved faces at many angles return light individually and the reflection follows the geometry. It also argues for walls over wet floors. Both stones are calcitic, and etching shows most plainly on black polished marble, so keep acidic products away from it entirely.
