Dolomite Tumbled Marble Octagon Mosaic Tiles

Regular octagons cannot tile a plane. Set them side by side and a small square gap opens wherever four of them meet, because the shape simply does not tessellate on its own. The dot fills that gap. It is among the oldest solutions in floor design, used in Roman and Victorian schemes alike, and it survives because it is the honest answer to the geometry rather than an ornament added afterwards.

Dolomite is a sound choice for it. Because dolomitic marble contains magnesium carbonate rather than calcite alone, it is harder and less reactive to acid than an ordinary white marble, which counts on a floor pattern with this many edges and this much grout line. Its colour is a clean, near-uniform white with restrained veining, so the octagons read as a field and the dots do the work of marking the repeat.

Tumbling rounds every corner, and an octagon has eight of them, so eased edges account for a larger share of the visible surface than they would on a rectangle. That is what gives the sheet its distinctly worn, hand-laid character. Seal before grouting.
