Limestone - Noche Travertine Fan / Scallop Honed Mosaic Tile

Shellstone limestone in the body of each scallop with a border of Noche travertine, honed. Noche is the darkest stone used across the fan range, running from walnut to a near-black brown, and set against a sandy limestone it produces the strongest outline of the set.

What is unusual here is that the two stones come from different families rather than merely different colours. Limestone is a compacted sediment with a fine, closed grain. Travertine formed around mineral springs and carries gas cavities right through the body of the stone. On a honed face those cavities appear as clean-rimmed openings, so the dark border has a visible open texture that the pale body does not.

That difference matters at installation more than it does to the eye. The travertine border absorbs sealer and grout far more readily than the limestone body, and a dark grout pushed into unsealed Noche is close to impossible to lift afterwards. Seal the sheet, let it cure, then grout; where cavities have been left unfilled, expect to seal again once grouting is done.

Setting out matters too. A fan drawn in a strong dark line shows any drift in the courses immediately, so measure from a centre line and dry-lay a full sheet width before committing. In return, the pattern carries across a large floor without needing anything else in the room to support it.
