Shellstone Honed Limestone Basket Weave Mosaic Tile

The strength of contrast in those small squares decides how loudly the pattern speaks, and here it has been kept deliberately low. A dark square against a pale weave produces a graphic, immediately legible pattern that the eye reads from across a room. A tan square against cream produces something much quieter: the repeat is visible when looked for and recedes when it is not. That makes this version usable where a bolder basketweave would take over, whether a small bathroom floor, a cloakroom, or anywhere the pattern is meant to be discovered rather than announced.

Shellstone supplies its own detail at closer range. The stone formed from compacted shell debris, and a honed face cuts through those fragments to show them as pale sections and curved slivers across the surface, different on every piece. It is a texture found by looking, which suits a pattern working at the same volume.

Limestone is porous and calcareous. Seal the sheets before grouting, particularly if a contrasting grout is planned, and keep cleaning products neutral; acids will etch the honed face and dull the fossil sections.
