Shellstone Brushed Limestone Wall & Floor Tiles
Shellstone limestone in a rectangular wall and floor format, brushed. The brushed finish is the defining feature and is often confused with honing, so it is worth being exact: the face is worked over with abrasive wire brushes rather than ground level, which wears the softer parts of the stone back slightly and leaves the harder parts standing proud.
On Shellstone that treatment does something a honed face cannot. This is a fossiliferous limestone, formed from accumulated shell debris, and the shell fragments are harder than the fine matrix around them. Brushing therefore lifts the fossils into slight relief, so the shell sections can be felt under a hand and not only seen. The creamy ivory and warm sand ground stays matte throughout, with no reflection to flatten the texture out.
The practical gain is grip. A brushed surface carries a fine, consistent tooth, which is why the finish appears on bathroom floors, wet room bases and around pools far more often than a smooth one does. It also disguises the light scuffing a floor collects, in a way a level face does not.
Limestone is porous and calcareous, so it takes an impregnating sealer, and a brushed face presents more surface area to seal than a smooth one; expect it to absorb noticeably more product on the first coat. It suits floors, walls and wet areas in contemporary and period settings alike.
