Shellstone Limestone Honed Marble Hexagon Mosaic Tile

Shellstone formed from accumulated shell debris compacted into limestone, so the fossils are not decoration applied to a surface; they run through the body of the stone. Honing grinds a level plane straight through them, and what appears as a result are true cross-sections: pale rings, curved slivers and broken shell profiles, cut wherever the plane happened to fall. Every hexagon is a different section through the same deposit. Brushing, by contrast, wears the softer matrix back and leaves the harder fossils standing proud, so they are felt rather than read.

Honed is the version to choose when the surface should stay calm and the interest should be close-range. The creamy ivory ground remains even, light falls across it without highlights, and the fossil sections register only when you are near enough to look for them. At two inches across, each hexagon is large enough to hold several.

Limestone is porous and calcareous, so it takes an impregnating sealer before grouting and benefits from a second coat once the grout has cured. Neutral cleaners only: acidic products etch the surface and dull the sections that make the stone worth having.
