Because the widths differ from course to course, the eye never settles into a repeat. It reads the surface as linear without being able to predict the next line, which is closer to the way timber boarding or a dry stone wall behaves than to a manufactured stripe. The effect is directional but not mechanical.

Silver Shadow suits the treatment. It is a dove-grey stone with fine organic veining and warm undertones, quiet enough that the geometry stays the subject. A heavily figured marble cut into narrow strips would fight the format, because every strip would carry a different fragment of a bold vein.

Polishing supplies the last part. Each strip is its own flat plane, so a polished sheet returns light in bands rather than as one reflection, and a wall picks up a faint corduroy of highlights as you move past it.

Set vertically it lifts a ceiling; horizontally it stretches a wall. Marble is calcium carbonate, so acids leave dull marks on a polished face: keep it clear of a hob and clean with neutral products.
