Split Hexagon Honed Dolomite Marble - Limestone Mosaic Tile

The dolomite repays understanding. Where most white marbles are calcite, dolomitic marble contains magnesium carbonate, which makes it harder and noticeably less reactive to household acids than a calcitic stone of the same colour. In practice it holds a honed surface for longer and is the more forgiving of the two in a kitchen. Its white is cooler and more even than Carrara's, with less drifting vein to interrupt the strip.

The limestone supplies the warmth. As a sedimentary carbonate, laid down from shell and mineral debris and compacted, it carries a fine uniform grain rather than veining, which is precisely why it partners well here. Two heavily figured stones in one hexagon would compete; a plain one lets the geometry speak.

The pairing is unusual in one respect: the two do not wear at the same rate. Limestone is the softer and takes the traffic first, so a floor in constant use develops a faint differential texture over years. On a wall or behind a basin the question never arises. Seal both before grouting, since the limestone is the more absorbent of the two and will draw pigment out of a dark joint.
