Calacatta Viola Split Face Marble Ledger Panel
Split face in marble is a different proposition from split face in a sedimentary stone. Marble is metamorphic, limestone recrystallised under heat and pressure, so it has no bedding planes to part along. Its structure is interlocking crystal, and a broken face therefore follows crystal boundaries rather than a layer, producing a sharper and more faceted relief than travertine or limestone give.
The stone is Calacatta Viola, among the most dramatic marbles in use: a crisp white ground crossed by broad sweeps of deep burgundy, violet and smoky grey. On a sawn tile those veins would be seen as a flat pattern. On a split panel the fracture cuts across them at every angle, so the colour appears on facets pointing in different directions and catches light at different intensities. The vein stops being a line on a surface and becomes a seam running through a solid.
That makes this the most assertive panel in the range, and it needs the discipline that implies. One wall, one fireplace, one alcove. Put it on two surfaces facing each other and the room has nothing quiet left in it.
Wall cladding only. Calcitic like every marble in its family, it marks where acid reaches it, and a broken face cannot be refinished once damaged.
