Calacatta Viola Wave Marble Tile

Calacatta Viola milled into a fluted wave profile: the most heavily figured marble in the catalogue given the most sculptural surface treatment available. It is worth being clear-eyed about that combination before specifying it.

Most fluted tiles are cut from stones with modest figure, because the profile is meant to supply the interest and the stone is meant to supply the ground. Calacatta Viola does not behave as a ground. Its burgundy, violet and smoky grey arrive as broad masses rather than as fine lines, and when a curved profile is milled across them, those masses break into bands that swell over each crest and darken into every trough. Two strong patterns end up occupying the same surface.

The result is genuinely striking and correspondingly demanding. It wants a single flat plane, well lit from one side, with nothing else in the room competing for attention: one chimney breast, one reception face, one wall behind a bath. Wrapping it around a corner or running it over several planes turns spectacle into noise, and there is no quiet version of this tile to retreat to.

A milled relief is a wall material and cannot be refinished. The stone is calcitic, so acidic contact leaves permanent dull marks in a surface that cannot be ground back.
