Travertine Walnut Versailles Pattern Paving Patio Tile Set

A Versailles set is not a single tile but a repeating group of four formats, squares and rectangles in related sizes, designed to be laid together as one module. Repeat the module and the joints never line up into a continuous run, so a large terrace reads as a considered floor rather than as a grid.

The pattern deserves planning on paper before anything is unpacked. Each set covers a fixed area in a fixed proportion of sizes, so the layout has to begin from the module rather than from an edge, and cuts should be pushed out to the perimeter where a border or a change of material can absorb them. Working outwards from one corner, as with single-format paving, produces a mess at the far side.

Walnut travertine supplies the colour: deep amber, toasted caramel and earthy brown, warmer and darker than the classic beige travertines. The tumbled surface gives an eased edge and a broken face, which suits an outdoor terrace where a sawn arris would look imported into the garden.

Being travertine, it is porous and its cavities will hold water. Outdoors that argues for a sealer intended for external use, periodic re-treatment, and a fall that drains the terrace properly rather than letting water stand on the surface.
