Split Hexagon Carrara White - Platinum Grey Honed Marble Mosaic Tile
Strips of Carrara White and Platinum Grey marble, alternated inside each hexagon and honed to a flat matte, give the cool version of the split hexagon: a stack of cubes in white and smoke rather than in earth tones.
Marble is the material that suits this construction best. It is a metamorphic stone with a tight crystalline structure and no bedding voids, so a strip can be cut narrow and still hold a clean, unchipped edge, which is the precision the pattern depends on. Carrara brings its familiar milky ground with soft grey drift; Platinum Grey answers with a darker and more linear vein. Set side by side at this scale the two read as light and shadow, and that is exactly the cue the eye uses to construct depth.
The honed finish is doing deliberate work here rather than serving as a default. Polished marble would throw specular highlights across a faceted surface and wreck the geometry by adding a second, competing pattern of reflections. Honing holds every face at the same matte value, so the only variation reaching the eye is the tonal one.
Both stones are calcitic and will etch where anything acidic reaches them, whether lemon, wine or limescale remover; etching shows as a dulled patch rather than as a stain. Behind a kitchen hob that is a genuine consideration, on a bathroom wall or in a hallway it rarely arises. An impregnating sealer slows staining but does not prevent etching.
