Valencia Tumbled Travertine Hexagon Mosaic Tile

Travertine is a freshwater limestone laid down in layers around mineral springs, and the Valencia bed carries that history plainly: caramel, biscuit and pale sand run in roughly parallel bands rather than in the branching veins of marble. Because a single sheet draws its hexagons from across the block, each one shows a different part of that sequence, so the pattern gathers depth as the area grows. The small open pores that give travertine its name are left as they are here, and they are what give the surface its relief and its chalky quality in daylight.

Tumbling is the step that makes this version practical. Rolling the pieces with abrasive rounds the arrises and takes the sharpness off the face, so the joint line reads more generously from standing height and the geometry stays legible. It also removes the flat reflectivity a sawn face keeps, which matters under downlights, and the broken texture disguises the light scratching that a busy floor collects.

Being a porous calcareous stone, it wants an impregnating sealer before grouting and a second coat afterwards. It belongs in bathroom floors, wet room bases, cloakrooms and kitchens; sustained commercial traffic asks more of a stone than travertine comfortably gives.
