Valencia Travertine Honed Hexagon Wall & Floor Tiles
Valencia travertine cut as a large hexagonal tile and honed. Most travertine hexagons are mosaic sheets; at this size the stone gets to show its structure properly, and the structure is the interesting part.
Travertine was deposited in layers around mineral springs, and gas escaping through the setting sediment left cavities running through the body of the stone. A honed face cuts a level plane straight through them, so each tile carries a scatter of clean-rimmed openings across an otherwise smooth surface. On a small mosaic piece there might be one or two. On a large hexagon you see the distribution of the pores itself, which is what gives travertine its recognisable character.
Whether those cavities are filled before installation is a decision rather than a fault. Left open they hold shadow and read as genuine texture; filled, the surface becomes easier to clean and the tile reads closer to limestone. Either way the sealing sequence matters, because open pores take up grout permanently.
The colour sits in warm ground, soft taupe through sandy beige to biscuit, which makes it a natural partner for timber and warm metals rather than for cool greys. Honing keeps the surface velvety and even without polishing the tonal depth away. Seal before grouting, then again once the grout has cured.
