Platinum Honed Marble Wall & Floor Tiles

Platinum, honed, as a rectangular wall and floor tile. A note on the name first, because the catalogue carries two stones with similar ones: Platinum is the paler, pearlescent grey with a fine white vein network, while Platinum Grey is the darker and more fragmented stone. They are different materials and they do not sit together comfortably in one room.

What distinguishes Platinum is the form of its veining. Rather than travelling in a direction, the white crystalline veins branch and reconnect across the face in a fine reticulated web. Geologically this happens when a stone fractures in many directions and the resulting cracks are later filled with recrystallised calcite; visually it produces a pattern with no beginning and no end.

That carries a straightforward benefit. A web has no axis, so tiles can be laid in any orientation, off-cuts go back into the run, and there is no continuous vein to break awkwardly at a corner. Across a large floor this removes most of the setting-out difficulty that a strongly directional marble creates.

The ground is a soft pearl grey with creamy oyster undertones, which keeps it warmer than a true cool grey and easier to pair with timber. Honing holds it matte and even. The stone is calcitic, so acids etch it and neutral cleaning products are the only safe ones.
