Carrara White and Platinum Grey Fan / Scallop Honed Marble Mosaic Tile

The fan, or scallop, rendered in marble: a milky Carrara body with each arc bordered in stormy Platinum Grey, honed to a flat matte.

Marble behaves differently from limestone under a curved cut. It is metamorphic, limestone that heat and pressure have recrystallised, so its structure is interlocking crystal rather than compacted sediment. That makes it harder, and it means an arc can be cut narrow and still hold a crisp, unchipped edge along the whole sweep. The border pieces here are slender, and they stay slender without breaking up.

The pattern itself is directional in a way that is easy to overlook. Scallops read as pointing somewhere, and a floor of them pulls the eye along their axis. Set running away from a doorway they lengthen a room; turned across it they do the opposite. In a shower enclosure they are usually laid fanning upward, so that water and sight lines both run with the pattern rather than against it.

The grey border also carries the veining. Carrara's own drift is soft and pale, so the visual weight sits in the outline rather than in the field, and that is what stops a figured stone turning a curved pattern into noise.

Both marbles are calcitic. They etch where acid reaches them and a level face shows it more than a textured one, so keep them clear of a hob and clean with a neutral product.
