Six rhombi meeting at a point are one of the most ambiguous figures in design. Shade all six identically and the eye reads a flat six-pointed star. Shade them in three alternating tones and the same six shapes snap into a three-dimensional cube, which is the illusion behind every tumbling-block floor ever laid. This mosaic deliberately takes the first reading: all the diamonds are cut from the same grey, so the stars stay flat and graphic against the white field, and the surface reads as pattern rather than as false relief.

Honing is what holds that reading steady. Any gloss would put highlights on some diamonds and not others, and the moment the six stop matching in value the cube starts to appear where it was not wanted.

The pattern is directional in one sense only: the stars sit on a grid, so setting out from a centre line matters, and a run that drifts will show at the first corner. Both marbles are calcitic. Seal before grouting; neutral cleaners only.
