Basketweave mosaic tiles

Basketweave alternates pairs of rectangular chips with a contrasting square dot, so the surface reads as woven. It is the pattern most associated with traditional British bathrooms, and it still does the job it did a century ago: it fills a floor without needing a border to finish it off.

Ours are mostly polished — Carrara White with Platinum Grey, Dolomite, Silver Shadow, plus a honed Shellstone limestone and a polished travertine. The dot is the decision that changes the room. A dark dot draws the weave out and makes a pattern of it; a tonal one leaves it as texture you notice only up close.
