Tumbling is a mechanical process rather than a grinding one: finished pieces go into a drum with an abrasive medium and come out with their edges knocked off and their faces slightly pitted. Nothing is sawn-sharp afterwards. In the mosaic range this is a marble and travertine finish, and the two behave differently in the drum — travertine loses more from its open voids, marble rounds more evenly.
What the process buys is tolerance. A rounded arris cannot show a chip, which is why a tumbled floor still looks intact in a hallway after years that would have left a crisp edge looking tired. The trade is a wider, softer grout joint that is part of the finished look rather than a fitting error, and a slightly thirstier face that wants a penetrating sealer before it is grouted rather than after.
