Polishing carries on where honing stops: the ground face is buffed with progressively finer heads until the crystal structure closes up and throws light back. Almost every sheet we hold in this finish is marble, and that is not a buying preference — marble has the crystal density to take a mirror and hold it, where a porous stone simply will not close up under the head. One travertine basketweave is the single exception in the range.
The gloss is worth understanding before specifying it, because it is a condition of the surface rather than a property of the stone. Depth of veining reads at its fullest here and a matt version of the same block will look a tone flatter — that is the case for it. Against it: the same reflection that shows the vein also shows every dull spot and fine scratch, and a wet polished floor is the least sure-footed surface in the range. Walls, splashbacks and feature panels are where it earns its place.
