Hexagon is the shape we make most, and the one held in the widest spread of stones — marble, travertine and limestone, in honed, tumbled, polished and brushed. Chip sizes run from around 23 mm up to 48 mm across the flats. The smaller chip follows a shower fall or a curved wall more willingly; the larger one keeps a big floor from looking busy.
The six-sided grid has a practical advantage over a square one: perimeter cuts fall on an angle, so a room that is out of square is far less obvious at the edges. It is also why hexagon keeps turning up in period British bathrooms — the shape has been laid here since the Victorian era and does not read as a trend.
